a way to terminate services after closing the programs?

hi. I'm trying to tweak my computer to run faster. I've noticed that when I run programs such as AIM and other such things it will start up certain services. However, when i close the programs like AIM, the services that were started will remain active. Is there a way to have these services close or terminate when I close the program? Thanks
