It may not help, but see if the procedure
here allows the installation to identify the presence of hard drives in your system.
If you had 64-bit Windows on the computer it would accommodate 8GB of RAM but since you don't (and since 64-bit Windows is not offered as an option on that system by Dell) youi are limited to 2GB.
