Contact Dell and prove ownership and they should be able to help you.

To reinstall windows we do not have to enter the CD key if we are using Dell OEM CD.
To reinstall windows, please insert the windows disk into the CD drive and restart the system.
Please press F12 key on Dell logo. Please select boot from CD rom option and press enter key.
You will see the windows setup screen and it will not ask for the CD key.
Thanks

Sonu007:

FYI, if that is a registered Key Code. If it is, you legally can not use it to install another copy of XP onto another computer.

Be cause Dell computers are validated via the bios. But only on that computer legally. Giving key code info in a posting could be a violation,  I know you can install XP or XP pro on Dell computers without the key code. But then again it applies to that computer only for legal purposes.

FYI.

I have had this happen recently with several different systems.  I think the problem is this: When Dell and other companies install Windows XP to a large number of computers, they use a "generic" product key.  this is the one that is activated when you first use your system. It is not the same one that is on your COA label on your computer.  In recent weeks, these generic keys have been coming up as invalid (I think due to one of the Windows Validation updates).  All you need to do (if I'm correct in your case) is use the product key that is on the label on your computer to reactivate.  Everything should then be fine!

I too am having an activation key error. I've tried to call the number that it lists in the telephone option, and everytime I enter my product key it tells me that it is in use. I have the key in front of me and it's a reinstall. My computer crashed and I had to reinstall it. What can I do or what am I able to do. I can't afford another copy of windows. Please help with utmost speed.
