"Additional log on information may be required....

Click to open your browser."  I just received 18 windows updates from Windows Update. I have a 64 bit OS using Windows 7.  I have this mesage popping up near my wireless internet access icon every few seconds.  Some thing was changed on my system after the windows updates. How do I stop this message.  I can get on the internet and receive email.

aps@sun, have you tried to dump cookies and temp files and then restart? Try cleaning it and the registry with ccleaner.

sugarbear.  I tried your suggestion and it did not solve the problem. I suspect something happened to the modem because I installed a new one and the error went away (at least I am hoping it did).  I installed a new Netgear Router today. The router works and I have set it up on my laptop, but I have a glitch with my DellStudio XPS 8100. When I use the routerlogin on the desktop and bring up the Netgear Genie when I click on wireless setup I get the following:

Internet Internet Explorer has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you is a solution is available.

I get this same message no matter what I click on the routerlogin page. I am really puzzled. Do I need java for this to work?

I wouldn`t think you would need Java, but I haven`t bought a new Router in ages so things may have changed.

Could the old router software be causing the new software to malfunction?

I spent a few days trying to solve this problem. I did not have any software from the old Linksys router on my computer.  I only accessed this router through the routerlogin.net.  The new router is a Netgear. I did not install any software for this router and only access it through the routerlogin.  I did try installing Java on this desktop but the installation of Java did not solve the problem.  I also tried the registry cleaner in CCleaner as you suggested and that did not solve the problem either.  I then set up the new router using my laptop. There were no problems with the laptop and I was able to establish the wireless connection.  I also spent over two hours on the phone with Netgear and they could not help.  The Netgear support person ended by telling me to call Dell, that it was a problem with this Dell desktop. I can get the Netgear routerlogin to come up on the screen but as soon as I click on any of the tabs like set up wireless or administration the message comes up “Additional log on information may be required…internet explorer has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.” I did discover  by accident that I can use the tabs in routerlogin if I use it in Compatibility Mode. I would like to solve this. Any ideas?

Try uninstalling IE and Use FF or Chrome to download and reinstall IE. Make sure the folder is removed from downloads and recycle bin.

"Make sure the folder is removed from downloads and recycle bin."

When I uninstall IE9 won't IE revert back to IE8? What folder are you refering to that should be removed from downloads and recycle bin?

If you uninstall  IE9, it will leave a folder marked IE in downloads folder which is in Document folder. You want to get rid of that file which may go to recycle bin. It won`t automatically revert back to IE8 with out a reinstallation of 8 or 9.  Have you tried to do a system restore to a point before the Microsoft updates? It would be hard to figure out which of those 18 updates has caused your problems.

Hi Teddie,  I installed Google Chrome.  I do not know how this changed IE9 however something did and I can now get into routerlogin using both Chrome and IE9.  For right now, since I have to get ready for Thanksgiving I will leave everything alone. I was able to do the things I needed to do and change with the routerlogin.  Thanks for the suggestions. Someday I will try what you have suggested. Annie

I know FF has a place to uncheck, so that it dosen`t become the primary browser, so I guess Chrome did to. I glad you  are back in working order.

Thanks Teddie for your help.  I am connected and back to working order. All my router settings are the way I want them. I am swamped with several reformats and friends/ family who want me to help them buy new laptops. I am finding that the folks in my circle do not want Dells anymore. Each has had a bad expereince with their Dells. Such a shame because I have bought many Dells over the years for myself and others.  I wish Dell support would be in this country and that the media would be included with Dells. Anyhow I am getting off topic.  Happy Thanksgiving to you! Annie
