well you pretty much take your pc back in time to how it was on the restore point.

you can also checkout your registry and see if this is a registry issue

check this key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

then under the "uninstall" key look for your itune and quicktime and see if any of their lines shows a "-1" in the value, negetive values under "uninstall' key are knows to caues this problem.

you should always be sure your system is clean, update your anti virus defenitions and then do a full system scan, you should never go online without being 100% that your pc is clean, your av is upto date and you got a proper firewall (software/hardware)

SkullTrail, I just looked at safarp and I think I may try it.  Thanks for the info.

The name of the program was iTunes, which also brought along Quick Time.  I wanted to keep Quick Time, but it wouldn't work once iTunes was removed.  So I tried to remove Quick Time next.  That's when my "Add/Remove" box refused to populate.  I was able to uninstall Quick Time from the "Start" menu, and then I downloaded it again separately.  (Worked fine.)

I'm not sure my system is clean.  What will happen if I try a System Restore?  I've never done it before.

Otiss, because I was unfamiliar with your "HKEY" info (didn't know how to get there), I Googled HKEY and found a website ( www.registryfix.com) where they scan and clean up system problems.  It's a free download, and I'm tempted to try it.  But before I do.... are you familiar with this site or other sites like it?  I'm just not that computer savvy.  (Sorry!)

no bonzomom, no need for all of that, I will walk you thru it ;)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

that is a path in your windows registry, your windows registry is a very important part of your operating system (windows) and if anything gets messed up in it your windows may not run at all, for this reason you always want to backup your registry before you make any edits.

in this case we are just looking so no big deals just make sure you dont change anything.

here we go

first press start>run> now the "Run" window opens up, in this widow type regedit.exe

now your registry opens up

look at the path I gave you

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

now locate the first part in the registry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

now the second part

SOFTWARE\

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

and so un and so forth till you go all the way down the path and you get to the "uninstall" key then open that key and look for "itunes (or what ever the name of the itune app you had" and aslo look for "quick time".

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

when you find them each show us a screenshot of that part.

if you don't know how to take screenshots then look here:

to post screenshot do this:

1. Make sure that the window of which you want to take a screenshot is on top (in the foreground).

2. Push the PRT SCR (Print Screen) key once

(on older computers do this: Hold down the ALT key and press the PRT SC key once).
This operation copies a bitmap image of the window to the Clipboard.

3. Open the Accessories menu (for example, from the Start button in Windows then All Programs) and choose Paint or Paintbrush. An untitled graphics window will open.

4. From the Edit menu, choose Paste. After a delay (how long depends on your computer) an image of the window of which you took a screenshot will appear in the Paintbrush edit window.

5. From the File menu, choose Save As. You can now choose File Name and below that you can choose Save As Type: and I suggest you save as type .jpg
(IN older computers with Paintbrush: Your choices include 256-color Windows bitmap format (.BMP), monochrome .BMP format, 16-color (4-bit) .BMP format, 24-bit .BMP format, and .PCX format. I'd suggest either 256-color or 16-color .BMP format, depending on your framebuffer.) save it on your destop as lets say picture.jpg.

6. Now go to ImageShack and you can choose the settings below, hit the "choose" tab and navagate to your destop and pic the picture, our example is picture.jpg so we gonna navagte to the destop and choose picture.jpg.

7. Now hit "host it" and wait a bit and the page will reload and you will see this:

now choose Thumbnail for Websites and copy the whole link and pase it here for thumbnails.

If the pic is small enough that it does not need the thumbnail then just copy the "Direct link to image" and then in the post box here just hit the "IMG"(its got a picture of a tree ;) ) tab and paste the address there then hit "ok".

I got into my Registry, found the "Uninstall" folder, and did not see iTunes or Quick Time.  I did see a lot of files with just a string of numbers.  And unfortunately, I accidentally clicked the wrong thing and wound up with something on the right side of that dialog box, which is now terrifying me.  It reads like this:

Name                Type               Data

ab (Default)       REG_SZ            (value not set)

I haven't clicked on ANYTHING yet, as I'm afraid I'm going to blow up my computer.  How do I get that stuff off there, or do I just not worry about it?

As for the rest -- pasting an image of that screen on here -- I was okay until Image Shack.  I actually wound up with a thumbnail, but NO ONE would have been able to read it!  It was too small, and I got too frustrated to go any further.

So now if I could just undo whatever NEW damage I may have done to my computer, I'll be grateful.
