The entries are in the registry as subkeys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current version\uninstall. Start/run, type regedit, click OK. navigate to the above key by clicking on the + signs in the left pane tree.

Each key has a numerical name like {035A00E1-3975-4267-9F39-1DC4745090B7}, but if you click on any one,  in the right pane look for DisplayName, which tells you in plain English how they are listed in add/remove.

Delete the keys that correspond to the ones you don't want. If in doubt leave it..

Before deleting anything, a wise precaution is to export the uninstall key first, click on the Uninstall key, File menu, export, name it anything you like, with .reg extension. If you delete anything by accident that you did not mean to, double clicking on the .reg file you made will merge the original back into the registry.

Ok. I tried that but I don't see any of them in there.

Edit: I did look through all of the keys in uninstall. None of them are there.

Sorry, I may have misled you. I should have added that other subkeys in uninstall have English names, maybe you should check those as well, actually I think it is these, if they have a DisplayName value in the right pane that are the ones that appear in Add/Remove.

Would an in-place upgrade fix it?

Ok, it's not listed in that. Go to this page. http://webpages.charter.net/4ramjet/addremove.JPG
That's what it looks like.

Sledgehammer to crack a nut. One more thing to try, download the free add/remove clean up tool

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm

scroll down to this section:

Add and Remove - Remove or Hide Entries

This program enables you to hide items listed in your Add/Remove Programs list in the control panel without losing the information needed to uninstall the program.

To hide a program that is listed in the Add/Remove Programs list, simply uncheck the entry.

If you want to uninstall a program that you have hidden, simply run the cleaner and check the empty check box. The program will then be visible in the Add/Remove Programs list. Download here.

I haven't tried it but Kelly's Korner is very reliable, one of the best sites for tips and trouble shooting.

The picture on your page may not be complete (there is no line along the bottom), it shows 15 entries up to something called Copy. There don't seem to be any duplicates that I can see, each entry has a (in some cases slightly) different name.

I tried the tool and it faithfully shows the entries in my add/remove list, presumably because they are also the ones in the \uninstall registry key. If the phantom entries in add/remove were not in the registry, I cannot think where they have come from.

My original suggestion conforms to MS article

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310750&Product=winxp

and to all other pages I could find. The only other suggestion I have found is to reinstall/uninstall the application.

Can't help beyond that, I'm afraid, sorry.

PS found one more suggestion from the Elder geek

http://www.theeldergeek.com/remove_previously_deleted_app_listings.htm

Method I: This method avoids editing the registry and should be tried first.

The easiest way is to open Add/Remove Programs and select the listing for the program you know has already been deleted. Select the application and click the Remove button. Since there is no application to 'remove', the process will time out and you'll be presented with an option to remove the entry.
