Admin problems

Hi

I have a Dell inspiron 1300 running windows xp home edition. I have had problems installing some software and they have suggest I go to the users and groups option in admin tools and set it to admin however in both normal mode and safe mode admin I do not have any user setting available does anyone know why this may be missing.

Thanks

What type of error are you receiving when you install software?

If this is a permissions issue, perhaps your username is not listed as having permissions from within the registry.

If that is what it is, then follow this guide to fix it:

Let me know if that fixes your problem...

Ok the exact error is

Error 1406: Could not write to Key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\CLSID\{}\In ProcServer32...

Error - 1406: Could not write InstanceIndex to key...

I have used regedit and set the permisson on admin myusername etc to allow . I di try to do this under admin tools but I do not have the user options there. I am using xp home. This is really staring to drive me mad as I have set allow on everything in sight under my admin login and admin in safe mode.

So you did go into regedit, navigate to the key that is giving you the error (so, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\CLSID\{}\In ProcServer32...).

Then right click on the key (when I say key, I am talking about the left hand side of the registry, the area that looks like folders). So right click on the Key In ProcServer32, then go to Permissions. Click on your username (if it is listed, and check to make sure that you have full permissions for that key)

Is your Username listed as having Permissions?

If you have already done this and the change is not working, try doing it in safe mode (when you are logging in to safe mode you should be logging in not as your normal username but as "ADMINISTRATOR" which is a hidden user that is only selectable when you go into safe mode.

Hi

Yes have have  made sure that the admin rights have been selected in normal and safe mode for that key and the whole registry. The problem is I get the error message for every single key it tries to write to. Its as if I have no admin rights when I install only this software. Everything else I install works. Is it normal not to have the users option in XP home edition? I have even reinstalled windows and then set the admin rights and I still get the same errors.

Ok I am being driven to distraction with this I have installed the same software on a old Gericom with windows XP family and it installs without any problems.  I have set the registry on the machine exactly the same as the gericom in safe mode admin and normal mode but it will still not install. Please can anyone out there please please help me.

Thanks
