Admin user profile won't load

Hello,

The admin user profile won't load on my PC. I've tried running system restore but that asks for the admin password which does nothing, presumably because the account is corrupted. I've only one admin account and two ordinary user accounts. I've done a search on the web and the only solution I've found is to use the Windows DVD during boot-up, but my PC came with it pre-installed and so I don't have this (I've a dell re-installation DVD, but this doesn't work)

Has anyone any suggestions for recovering the user profile?

Thanks,

David

One additional thought - it was working earlier today and the last thing I did was run windows update and installed 4 (I think) updates, so hopefully I just need to restore it from the system restore point from earlier.

Have you rebooted yet? Those updates require a reboot. You do have the Windows dvd Vista disk--it's that reinstallation dvd that came with the computer. To use it, you need to reboot with the disk in your cd-dvd drive, press F12 at first screen to access the boot menu and select your cd/dvd drive. But do a reboot first to see if the problem clears up.

I did reboot, a couple of times. First thing I tried.

Thanks for the advice on using the re-installation disk. I got into system restore that way and have fixed the problem, although strangely I had to go back 2 restore points (and several days). But its fixed now.

Thanks for the help,

I have the same problem. My user account - which is the admin account - won't load. I use my computer for work, and this is very alarming.

However I have moved house twice since purchasing, and have no idea if I had the DVD mentioned, nor what it looks like, nor where I have put it.

What can I do?

I am not very computer minded.

I have tried to do a system restore, but the computer won't recognise my password.

I am worried about whether it is safe for me to continue using the PC - if it has something wrong with it that is bad enough to shut down the admin section of it, then should I risk doing my work on it? I don't want to lose it or have it corrupted.

I'd like to understand why this has happened. I purchased the PC with Vista, because my very old PC kept crashing, I was hoping to avoid problems like this as I am so reliant on the computer for my work.
