Easiest thing to try is just a reinstall of Acrobat Reader
It will usually fix whatever is wrong .. after it works you
may want to Disable Auto Updates of Acrobat Reader
if you think that was what caused the problem.

Thanks for the responses, but when I tried to uninstall Adobe 7.08, I got a message that there were other programs connected to it running and to turn them off.  There were none.  So then I tried downloading the latest version of Adobe AR - 9.0.  No dice when it got to the "Install" part.  The message was that "the patch package could not be opened" and I might not have the authority to run the program on my C drive.  (Huh?)  I've done two System Restores to the dates I know it was working (before I agreed to the January 15 update download to make my version 7.0 into 7.08) and it still gives me the same responses.

All suggestions are welcome.

Here's something else that may help in assisting me.  I can open an existing PDF file that I've saved, so I must have a working version of the software.  It's when I click on a link to a form or pub that I get the error messages and the link won't open.

Tommyo,

What does the Macromedia uninstall link have to do with Adobe Acrobat Reader?  Before I use it, I want to make sure this is the right link.  Thanks.

My bad; sorry..  I re-read your question numerous times but I don't understand it.... please disregard my previous link above.
I was misunderstanding you as trying to delete Acrobat to install a newer version of it; sorry 'bout that...
