I've had a similar problem with my Windows XP which was was rebooting by itself. I wasn't even able to get to the desktop because it would just turn off again after the Windows logo loads. I called Dell tech support and the tech instructed me to open the tower, take out the RAM and put it back in again(which was really frustrating to put back on) and that fixed the problem.
But since you were able to get in the desktop, it might be different. I tried looking for it at google but I don't think those that I found can be of any help. And those that are kind of like this are still unanswered. Have you tried to do a system restore on the computer(I started distrusting this method though since it messed up my computer twice)? But you should back up files first if you're able to do so. Or call the tech support?
As to why her computer is running so slow, well here's a site I found that could have the reasons, but you can mostly find them if you Google it.
could be just a loose memory chip! I have had that problem before, if memory chips are secure, next thing could possibly be power supply starting to go bad.
Newtonet, I am no pro with Xp but from what I have heard and seen is that it is not a good idea to have McAfee and Norton software installed on the same pc. Everyone that I know that has tried it ended up with almost the same problems as you have described. So you may want to try removing some of the anti virus software and see if that helps. It may come down to having to reformat the HD also to correct it.
Also if your friend is worried about getting viruses online I would only use one of the three that was mentioned and not all. If she/he wants extra protection just get Adaware SE or Spybot SD they are both free downloads. Zone Alarm also has a free firewall download. Just my 2 cents..:smileyhappy:
ok, still havent found a solution to this problem. Someone said it could be a new virus or something in the IE add-ons. Anyone see anything out of the ordinary with these add-ons?
