If this was installed recently, do a System Restore to latest date available before you installed it. Personal files won't be lost, but any Microsoft updates originally installed after the date used for the System Restore will have to be reinstalled.

Glad you got it sorted.

Just in case, reboot and press F12 before XP starts to load. Run full diagnostics on the hard drive. If errors are reported, copy them down and contact Dell for replacement, if you're still under warranty. Otherwise, back up your files to CD ASAP because the drive may be failing.

If no diagnostics errors are reported, run chkdsk on the HDD from your desktop:
click start>run
type in: chkdsk c:/f
click ok
A message will appear offering to run chkdsk at next boot up. Accept that offer and reboot. chkdsk will run before XP loads and fix any file system errors.
