Annoying Error Message---Help!!!

This is the error message I get on the desktop when booting up.  It appears twice and has to be x'd out twice.

MM-Tray.EXE-unable to locate the component.  This application has failed to start because MFC71U.DLL was not found.  Reinstalling the application may fix the problem.

From what you say, you probably know that the mm_tray.exe file is the Music Match Jukebox (MMJ) icon in the system tray & is associated with digital music player, music organizer etc..

The mfc71u.dll is a Microsoft MFCDLL Shared Library file

Looks like the dynamic link library (dll) file mfc71u.dll used by MMJ is missing or corrupt.

Or there’s some software conflict between various installed music player applications or their updates

You could try uninstalling & reinstalling MMJ (if you use or need it)?

The reinstall setup process should locate any files required from Windows OS, including the mfc71u.dll file, located in C:\i386, C:\Windows\system32 folders.

Bell Boy (Silver), Hello

Thank you for a thorough, comprehensive analysis of the problem.  I removed the program MMJ and it eliminated the problem.  You said to do the reinstall set up process if I want to restore MMJ.

Previously I had reinstalled my Windows XP and it didn't solve the problem.  I had to download all of the updates to get Windows to function properly again.

How do I go about reinstalling either MMJ or Windows XP it if I should choose to do so?

Thanks again,

Dan

Hi Dan

You don’t mention Desktop model?

Dell should have supplied a set of application reinstall/repair type CDs with the PC

Normally includes Windows OS CD, Resources CD (Drivers & Utilities), Sound Card CD, Monitor CD, plus (subject to purchase spec) other preinstalled software CDs, e.g. Sonic Digital, CyberLink PowerDVD, MMJ etc..

To reinstall MMJ use the relevant supplied (I hope) CD

To clean reinstall WXP use Windows OS CD & Resources CD (for Drivers)

Alternatively, system spec Drivers can first be downloaded from this site & burned to a CD for reinstallation

Summary Procedure:

Use removable media e.g. CD, flash drive etc. to backup all personal data, includes documents, pics, OE Folders & files, IE Favorites, etc.

Work off-line with only Monitor/Keyboard & Mouse connected

Full format HDD & reinstall WXP SP2

Install PC system spec drivers - in this order: (1) Chipset (2) Video (3) Sound (4) NIC (5) Modem (6) + any others.

Install & enable Anti Virus & Firewall software before going online for Windows & AV DAT update downloads

Work off-line again, disable AV & start to install software/hardware from CD media

Enable AV & scan any media (CD, flash drive etc) used before reinstalling any backup personal data files

That’s it !

Excellent recommended detailed procedures to read/print off are here & here

Hope the above answers your questions?

Bell Boy,

Thanks for your clear and concise directions.  Although I could probably muddle through the proceedure to restore my Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop with XP Media Center Edition to it's original state, I choose to leave well enough alone and go with a functioning computer and not risk being down with no technical help.  I can live without the MMJ program if this is all I have to sacrifice.
Thanks again for your valuable help.

Dan

Didn’t know what computer you had, but:

The Inspiron E1505 should have the Dell PC Restore by Symantec (a.k.a. DSR) utility

You said quote, “Previously I had reinstalled my Windows XP…”

If you meant to say "used Windows System Restore", then DSR will still be intact

DSR wipes your computer system clean, restoring it back to how it was when “taken out the box”

That is, returns Windows OS plus all preinstalled software back to original condition

DSR only takes 10 minutes whereas Window clean reinstall is more complicated & can take hours

Scroll down in relevant section of Inspiron E1505 User Manual that explains DSR here

Also FAQs in previous link here

Scroll down to "How do I use the PC Restore by Symantec utility"

But if you did previously do a WXP reinstall  then it probably deleted the DSR utility?
