Anti-Virus Programs for Windows ME

Now that Microsoft no longer intend to support Windows ME Norton and AVG will not support their antivirus programs used in a Windows ME environment. I suspect that other anti-virus/anti-piracy program suppliers will follow . Since I use AVG on my Dimension 4100 computer using Windows ME I am anxious to find a suitable replacement. I am sure that there are other Dell users in the same predicament, how are you trying to overcome the problem?

You could take a look at Avast.

Thanks for your reply. AVG can still scan my computer but cannot be updated, that was the reason for my message. In fact, I have it installed on the laptop (Windows XP) and that has been updated. I shall look at Avast tomorrow - it is time for bed here inthe UK.

thyde, grisoft & avast free editions of anti-virus are still listed as compatable w/me.
But do have limitations- grisoft avg lists one of their limitations as updates are limited to one per day.
You could entertain the thought of uninstalling on the machine that wont update & reinstalling the latest version.
Luck, Randy

[Thanks for your continued interest but your reply does not seem to agree with the information given on this website:

Perhaps I should add that I was referring to the free version.]

Oops!! Zonelabs has now updated to Version 7.1. I have no idea how this happened I was simply browsing on the Dim 4100 ME computer on the Zonelabs Support web-pages. I am writing this on the Dim 4500 XP computer.

I still have a 4100, WinME system, running AVG Anti-Virus without any problems.
Updates work fine.

Just be sure to upgrade to version 7.5 if you're running an older version ---
that could be part of your problem.   See below for detailed instructions.

The "once a day" limitation is part of the AVG FREE edition... it has nothing to do with Millenium.

P.S.  I have no idea why this thread suddenly switched topics, from Grisoft/AVG anti-virus, to ZoneLabs products.

EDIT:  To upgrade AVG from 7.1 to 7.5

Download the latest installation/setup file from

  1. Run the AVG Free Edition 7.5 Setup program you just downloaded
  2. Click "Next >" on the AVG "Welcome!" screen
  3. Click "Accept" on the "License Agreement on Use of an AVG Free Edition" screen
  4. Select "Repair installation" on the "Select Setup Type" screen and click "Next >"
  5. Select "Restart the computer now" (pre-selected by the program automatically) and click "OK" on the "Installation Complete!" screen to restart your computer and complete the installation

To ky331: Sorry it was my mistake to quote the Zonelabs website.

Thanks for your information about AVG 7.5. I have just tried to download and run the installation program but I have had no success, I get the following error message:

"Sorry, AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 needs Windows 2000 and above to be installed."

I was referring to AVG anti- VIRUS... avg75free_430a848.exe:

based on your reply, you tried downloading AVG anti- SPYWARE (formerly Ewido),
avg75free_430a848.exe:
which is a completely separate product.
