AOL AIM Question

Hello all,

I installed AOL AIM, didn't like it and deleted it. After deleting it this program is still listed in my list of start-up items. I contacted AOL 4 times asking how to completely remove this program and this miserable internet provider will not even respond to my request. Does anyone have any ideas?

Note: I do not & will not ever use AOL as an internet provider. These people just do not care.

It's not clear to me whether you're referring to AIM or AOL. AIM is the free instant message program. AOL is the client program used to connect to AOL, send/retrieve mail, etc. You need not use be an AOL subsriber in order to use AIM. AOL does not provide technical support for AIM.

In any event, consult this MS KB article regarding deleting items from the Add/Remove list:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=247501

The AIM common porblem FAQ may also be of some help:

osprey4,

I made an error in my post, sorry.

My question is in regards to AOL AIM and my list of start-up items, not my list of add/remove programs.

Thanks...........

I'll assume you're referring to AIM itself (not the AOL client). To remove from the startup list, first make sure the shortcut is not in your startup folder. If it is, delete it. Next, go to Start, Run, MSCONFIG (type this in), OK, click the Startup tab, and find and uncheck AIM.

osprey4,

Thanks for the reply.  I did all that.  What I want to do is remove the entry of it that is in the list of start-up items. I unchecked it but want to remove it from the list.

Don't worry about it. The cleanup button, as you've probably noticed, does not work. There's a registry hack, but as with most registry hacks, your more likely to mess up the registry than fix it.

BrickYard, Mike Lin's StartUp Control Panel will allow you to delete unused items from the startup list.  And it's free.
