Application error - Control Panel
I have the dreaded "Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module shell 32.dll, version 6.0.2900.2620, fault address 0x0002ac20". It is error code 1000 and occurs when I try to open the control panel. I can however access functions within the control panel by searching under help and using shortcuts for add/remove etc...
Forums have offered no solutions as yet. I have tried "SFC /scannow" to check the system files are intact but it has made no difference. I am happy to do a repair reinstall if needed but if this is a result of a bad update presumably the same will occur again.
Any ideas?

The shell32.dll file may be corrupted. Replace it (and any other missing or corrupted system files) by going to Start|Run, entering sfc /scannow (space before /) and clicking OK.

Thanks Denny
I have already tried that. There is no report given after sfc so I dont know if it made any changes to the files. The problem remained afterwards though.
