Application Error- Faulting application explorer.exe
When I try to access any of the folders/files in "my documents", the window will lock up. After a minute or so I will get the message that an error has occurred, which not only closes that window but then my task bar also momentarily vanishes.
The following are the errors i receive:
Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2800.1106, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.1217, fault address 0x000085c0.
Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2800.1106, faulting module comctl32.dll, version 6.0.2800.1106, fault address 0x00084ac8
the fault address various- however I believe that is the actual file I am trying to access
I should also let you know that I can view the same file that I am having these fault problems on another computer that is on my network and it views from the main folder I am trying to view from on the computer?
This doesn't happen for all my files, however it is happening more often than not to a large part of my files...seems to be maunly picture type files?
Please let me know what I need to do to fix this...without having to reinstall, backup all files, etc)

Try scanning the system files, in case they have become corrupted :
click start, run, type sfc /scannow (space between c and /), click OK. It may ask for your XP CD, so have that ready.

I had the same problem when I was copying data from a client's PC to my laptop. I had copied the My Documents folder from a Win98 machine to a folder within My Documents folder on my Win XP. From then on I got this message and found I was unable to delete those files from within Explorer. The only solution I found was to make copies of the offending files where I could and then delete the original in DOS using the short file name (in DOS you can see short file names using DIR /x /a). Feels like a Windows bug to me....
