Application Error for explorer.exe

I have had a problem with my system due to explorer.exe. I cant access any folders on the desktop(ex. my documents, my computer, trash) as well as the control panel, search, help and support, and the Windows Explorer application. The message that appears every time I try to enter any of the above is:
The instruction at "0x024c0065" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "written".
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

When I click on cancel the program doesnt debug, rather closes every window and shows only the background picture. The very same thing happens if I click OK. Any thoughts on how I can fix explorer.exe?

Does this happen in Safe Mode ?

(Different thought)> This may apply if you don't have Service Pack 2 installed.
