application failed to start because MFC70.DLL was not found.
I inadvertently deleted a file (I think) and got this message:
flash.exe - unable to locate component. This application has failed to start because MFC70.DLL was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
I tried to restore to an earlier date and got this message: Error loading C:\WINDOWS\System32\msief40.dll. The specified module could not be found.
Don't know what I'm doing,

As msieftp.dll is in the DLLCACHE (mine doesn't have any msief40.dl so your file might be there alsol)
You could try running SFC , which checks protected System Files for corruption & if found replaces them from reinstall..XP CD .
If it prompts for XP CD , hold Shift key while inserting XP CD to stop Auto play.
Use Start > Run & type
sfc /scannow (space after sfc)

System File Checker will not help, as neither mfc70.dll nor msief40.dll are a part of Windows XP. MFC70.dll is a part of Microsoft Visual Studio .NET, and the 2002 Standard versions of Visual Basic .NET, Visual C# .NET, and Visual C++ .NET. A search turns up no information on msief40.dll except several posts from users who have received the same error message you receive stating that the file is missing.
It is odd that the first error message referred to flash.exe, as flash.exe does not use mfc70.dll.
If the errors are preventing Windows from running you may be able to recover by doing a repair reinstallation of Windows XP using the instructions here.

msief40.dll does not appear in the Microsoft dll database (although that does not cover all MS software, it does include the more common ones).
Maybe spyware?

A couple of other recent posts report the same message about not finding it, but no solutions offered. I would post a HijackThis log on the virus forum if adaware and spybot don't find anything.
