No beep codes? Can she still access the BIOS? If she can, I'd suspect a bad HDD...

Try removing the power cord to the laptop, removing the battery. Then hold down the power button for like 30 seconds or so. Put the battery back in and then attach the power cord and try booting up.

Some Microsoft Idea's, try the Dell diags first.

Run the Hard drive diagnostics.  Scroll down to "To start the BIOS hard drive diagnostic, perform the following steps: "

There is also a more extensive Pre Boot Assessment you can perform if the hard drive diags don't turn up anything.

1. no beep codes
2. no access to BIOS
3. no access to Safe Mode
3a. sometimes the Dell splash screen shows then goes to black.
4. starts to boot, and then goes black
5. sometimes it doesn't start to boot it just comes up black.
6. cursor is now orange instead of white.

Now you guys are geniuses so I have given you the symptoms, you give me the antidote.

Thanks so much, be gentle.

Power down the Laptop, now hold the Fn key down and hit the power button while holding the Fn key down, continue to hold the Fn key down until you get you the PSA diagnostics.

Read my second link. This bypasses the normal bios.

Mombodog,
Here's the deal, we aren't even getting the BIOS screen for more than a split second if that. Sometimes it doesn't show up.

I read the second link on how to bypass the BIOS but I couldn't find where the information that I needed was.

What should I do for her?

Thanks,
Steve

OK she did that but ended up getting a black screen after the diagnostic printing appeared.

Thanks again mombodog,
Steve

She removed the first battery but does not see another battery cover there like you said.

All she sees is a hole where the battery went and some pins on the right.

Thanks mombodog,

I await your next suggestion and appreciate your help.

Power down and remove the primary battery, inside the primary battery bay look for another cmos battery cover, open it and disconnect the cmos battery for 15 minutes. Connect it back and see if it will post.

this is the cmos battery cover

The cmos battery may need replaced, it is a 7.2 volt battery.

If there is no cmos battery present, leave the main battery out overnight.

It's a tiny door on the bottom side where the big battery goes. Open it up from the bottom.

The CMOS battery is green colored. Just remove the cable from the speaker assembly - don't take it out.

Get an external monitor and see if that works
