Audio settings not saving?
I recently picked up an XPS 420 and have been very happy with it. However, Im having some issues with my audio settings resetting every time I reboot. I installed an XtremeGamer card (retail version) and none of my custom settings save. Everytime I reboot my master volume is reset to 88 and all my mic settings are reset. Additionally, my headset detection settings are also reset. Anyone else experience this? I have updated all my drivers and software from creative's website also and am running Vista SP1.

The same exact same thing happened to my Creative Labs sound card. The problem is that the sound card is not 100 % compatible with Vista SP1. Vista SP1 does not recgonize the card and therefore resets it every single time. Creative Labs is blaming MS for changing the tolerances and right now it doesn't look like they are willing to help anyone.
You will have to put up with it resetting every time.
I ended taking my Creative Labs card out and running the Sigmatel onboard audio which has no problems.
There are a lot of angry people over on the Creative Labs forums right now.

you can try to install the sp1 - otherwise, if it doesn't work anymore, you can uninstall the sp1 oder use the windows systemrecover-function. (uninstalling caused problems afterwards at me - so i used the systemrecover-function)
greetz, alex =)
p.s.: i'm not sure if it's called "systemrecover-function", because i'm german and my english is not perfect - in german it's called "systemwiederherstellung".

hi! i've just chatted with a dell-assistant and he checked my pc via the dell-connect-software. well, all drivers are installed correctly - consequently vista itself causes the problem because the dell-assistant proposed me to uninstall vista und reinstall it. i asked him about the problem with sp1:
>> firstly, you should install vista
>> secondly, install sp1
>> thirdly, install all drivers (in this ranking: chipset, graphics, audio, network, and then the rest)
>> software etc.
ok, i'll reinstall vista now...will report if it works afterwards!

hi!
i've just called the dell-xps-support a second time and the assistant/tutor sent me a link to a driver which should solve the problem. nevertheless, i think it's the same one as the latest driver for xtreme gamer.
click me
the download finished right know >> i'll test it in 5min and report if it worked!
greetz, alex =)
EDIT: the new driver didn't work, too. dell says the problem is caused by the eax-function in combo with vista (with xp it should work fine!). nevertheless, creative is working on a new driver which won't have this problem. for the reason dell doesn't know when this fixed creative-driver will be released, they'll send me a new soundcard on monday :smileyhappy:

ok - IT WORKS!!!
YAY! just found out that if i start the creative blue console with admin-rights, change some settings and close it, it takes longer to close - thought that the program takes longer to close because of saving the settings??
ok, but admin-rights weren't enough to make it work. consequently, i right-click on "creative console starter! in the startmenu >> properties >> security >> select "user (your account name)" >> advanced >> 3rd button from the left at the top of the new window which has just opened >> click edit >> select your name (not admin!) >> apply >> ok >> now you're in the first window again >> edit >> now you have a window with two lists - click on the first entry in the upper list, then tick the first box in the bottom list (do this with each entry of the upper list!) >> apply >> ok >> now you're again in the first window >> compatibility >> tick the box at the bottom "run program as admin" >> apply >> ok
now you have full rights for this programm! now make your settings clicking in the start-menu "creative >> creative console starter". now you should be asked if you want to allow the start of the console - click yes (or allow or run or something...just open it^^). now you can make your settings. then test it rebooting your pc - settings should be kept now!
if it doesn't work: press the windows-key + r >> type msconfig >> ok >> allow >> systemstartup >> untick all creative-entries except "creative volume panel" >> apply >> ok >> restart. (<< i don't know whether you can leave this step out yet. i'll test it on wednesday after school because i'll write at this day an important classtest and i still have to learn a little^^).
well, i'm just happy that it finally works :)
greetz, alex =)
p.s.: sorry if you don't understand everything but my english is not very good...please ask if you have any questions!
p.p.s.: i am not sure if it's really necessary to change the rights of all entries...maybe it works too when you only change the rights which belong to the entry with your name - i justed ticked all users^^ better too many instead of not enough... :)
p.p.p.s.: i'll post some screenshots this week if you need them - just tell me!
