Auto Update won't finish
When I turn on my laptop, I receive a message saying they are doing an automatic update 1 of 2. I suddenly un-froze today but I need help before it happens again. It stayed frozen on the screen for 2 days. This is the 3rd time this has happened. What can I do to stop this? I'm going crazy.

Pressing f8 does not help. When I start up, it goes directly to the config update 1 of 2. Then it freezes. The Dell logo doesn't ever have time to appear.

I recommend setting your update level to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them". You can set the update level as follows:
Choose Start > Control Panel > Security >, and then click the Windows Update icon. Click the Change Settings link. Press the button for Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them.
Manual updating enables you to be selective about which patches you install after checking good sources for news of any problems. Also manual updating appears to be less prone to the computer hanging.
