Automatic Updates Fail 0x80070643

Dell Dimension
4600C
Win  XP-Pro

Recent updates for Excel Viewer 2003 and  Office 2003 download but show Installation Failure , Error Code 0x80070643 when loaded to the system.  My question has 2 parts.  (1) How do I load these updates successfully and (2) How do I get rid of the 32 failed copies of the update now in my computer?

Try this

Have a look if they are showing in Add/Remove Programs as "Failed"

The "updates"" in question do not appear in the "Software Add/Removal" at alll.  They do appear (32 times) at the "Automatic Updates Web Site" in "Update History" and each one is marked as failed.  Automatic Updates keeps reporting both updates as 'downloaded, ready to install'.

I can`t find where they are stored, but they will be temp files.
Run a search for
*.tmp  and look for the KB numbers in the list found
or run Disk Cleanup and delete all temporary files and that should delete them

Did you fix the problem?

Perhaps I am too concerned that the "update failures" still show on the 'update history' of the Automatic Updates Web Site. I did not find any temporary (.tmp) files with the correct KB number or for that matter the correct name.  I did a Disk Cleanup just in case I had sommehow overlooked the tmp files.  I then enabled Automatic updates and it downloaded four updates.  Two were Office  2003  updates, one an Excel Viewer 2003 update and the fouth was the 14 meg IE 7 update.  The IE 7 update loaded successfully but the other three failed.  It appears I can not successfully load Office 2003 or Excel Viewer 2003 updates.  I think I should address " how to successfully load these files"  before trying to delete the record of previous failures.  Your thoughts?

Yes, just forget about the Updates History for the moment

Here are some MS links.  Use the "Search box" for the KB numbers you need.  This manual way might work for you when Automatic Updates fail.

The first site you suggested did not list either of the three  KB??? files that won't load successfully.  The second URL had all three and I downloaded each to the Desktop where I could keep track of them.  None of the three (KB919029)(KB923272) and (KB923275) would load.  I did note one thing.  In the long name version "Excel Viewer" was mentioned in each instance.  I do not have Excel on my computer but had downloaded the 'viewer' for those rare instances when I needed to view an Excel file.  I removed the Excel Viewer from my computer and Automatic Updates now works properly.  While I didn't find the problem with the viewer, the solution is satisfactory and everything is working correctly.  Special thanks for your help!

You are very welcome. :smileyhappy:

I`m glad you discovered what the problem was. Maybe you need to have Excel itself installed before the Updates will install.  At least it did not turn out to be a fault with the system.
