check to make sure "automatic updates" is enabled in "services".. also, are you using the default settings in ie/tools/options/security/internet zone? if not, you will need to add the windows updates website to your "trusted zone" (in ie/tools/options/security/trusted zone), and you must not have the security level there set too high so that it active-x controls are not prevented from running..
Did either of you notice that V5 now requires that Automatic Update must be set to automatic in Services now in order to use Windows Update? Even if you have the auto update turned off via control panel/system? That doesnt make a whole lot of sense to me and have no idea why they did it. It now leaves an event in the Event Viewer showing that Windows Update tried to run but couldnt. Kip

yes, kippy.. i turned the automatic updates service off because the new windows updates active-x control seems to phone home constantly (there are many "esent" entries in the event viewer), but then i couldn't use the windows updates website, until i re-enabled the service..
In my case the ESENT entries began when I went to the new version of Windows Update. And, what is weird I cannot access Windows Updates unless I turn off my Sygate Firewall. I am getting this message when I try to scan for Updates..."Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page." This is all pre-SP2 in any case which I installed last night.

redwolfe_98,
I am getting the ESENT entries also in Event Viewer, dozens of them. Check these links:
http://www.winxptutor.com/sp2/esent.htm
http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=102&eventno=4406&source=ESENT&phase=1.
