AVG automatic updates under Win XP ???

Using AVG 7 Free.   Have [tried to] set it to automatically update itself once daily, when it detects that I've connected to the internet.   This works just fine on a win ME system... but it seems that (on two separate) win XP systems, AVG is not even making the attempt to try to automatically update.   However, I can still explicitly click on "Check for updates" to obtain them.   But I would like to "fix" it to do so automatically.

I believe others (both here, as well as at the AVG forum) have posted a similar experience... sometimes attributing the problem to a conflict with AOL... others alleging it's a WinSock problem.   Any definitive help would be appreciated.

(I'm also posting this in the Virus/spyware forum.)

i assume you're talking about adding it under the "Exceptions" tab of the windows firewall.   If so, I already did that... as recommended by Grisoft, I added

avgw (main Windows program), avgcc (control center), avginet, & avgemc (e-mail client)...

and when this didn't work, I also added the other executable programs located in the AVG directory:

avgamsvr, avgupdln, avgupsvc, & setup

still not AUTOMATICALLY updating.

I'm using free edition AVG on several XP systems without any auto, update problems.
This is how I set it up,  Open "Scheduler" > " Name" > Update plan in Basic Mode > "Test" > Update >  "Last Test"  7/1/05 1:02:00 >  "Next start" 7/2/05 between 12:00pm and 1:59pm [1:02] > "Status" OK >  "Scheduled For" All users.

Have you tried removing AVG and then reinstall it?  This probably does not help, but I'm using Version 7.0.323.

Bev,

I have all that (except for time variations in when I performed my last manual update, and the time of day I've chosen to schedule the next automatic update).

I did not try an uninstall/reinstall.... but yes, i have the latest program version, 7.0.323.

again, i want to stress/clarify, I *CAN* right-click on the AVG icon in my system tray, select "Check for Updates", and have this work correctly... in fact, I now have reference file 267.8.8/37... so the updater can run and access the AVG update server, at my explicit request, under XP with firewall.   it's just the automatic (once-a-day) feature that's not functioning.

I've got the paid version of AVG 7 and use Win XP. I don't know what the free version is like but I have gone into the AVG program and designated a time to check for updates as well as run the virus program.

Are you able to get into the program and work with the schedule of events?

The 267.8.8/73 file is the same as I have.  I've never changed any settings in the SP-2 firewall for AVG..  Guess the only thing left, is to try a uninstall/reinstall.

The free version allows you to set the time to run both the updater and  A/V program.
