I did mean backup and yes, I back up to a 500GB external hard drive. The back up utiltiy within Windows worked with my Vista Ultimate but not with Windows 7. I have tried several suggested remedies to no avail. Any help will be much appreciated.
How about the Mechanic suggestion? If you don't have that installed. Open Backup and Restore, select Manage Space and see if there is an error message or a problem with the backup drive you can correct. I've just started using Backup on Win 7, so I'm not sure what else you can do. Try using Help to find other solutions like delete older backups and change your backup settings.

If System Mechanic software has been installed, it is known to cause this error. Uninstall the software.

Explain where the backup is being stored. You must have an external hard drive to backup Windows 7 or many, many dvd's.
Error 80070424 is common in Windows Update. Did you mean Update instead of backup? Big difference in meaning between the 2.
