Bad HTML Icon?
I have Windows XP SP2 on a dell laptop. Everytime I save a web page on my desktop..I get the "Windows Component" Standard Icon and not the Explorer Icon that I believe I should get. I've written earlier about this issue..Got suggestions like ShellIconCache removal...System search (including hidden files can't find this "cache file"...I went into my folder options to try to change the icon preferences in the Advance settings...No Good! Still comes up with that stupid Windows Component icon..Looks like a blank mini-screen...Only seems to be doing that for the HTML files...Anyone? Any suggestions...Driving me bonkers!

Right-click the desktop icon and choose properties. Click the "Change icon" button and on the dialog that opens in the "Look for icons in this file" window browse to C:\Windows\system32\url.dll and select the appropriate icon from there.

Odd, the url.dll file is a part of Internet Explorer 6 and 6.1. There should be a copy in both C:\Windows\system32 and C:\Windows\system32\dllcache. With XP SP2 the version should be 6.0.2900.2180.

I must be doing something terribly wrong.
1. I go to the desktop icon that I "saved as" from the internet..(Yahoo Home page) right click.
2. I click on Properties
3. I get a Yahoo Properties! Window. "Opens with" shows IE explorer but it gives me that Microsoft Office 2003 Component Icon.
4. There is a "Change"Button. I click on that.
5. I then get and "Open with" dialog box with the "Choose the program you want to use to open this file" statement. The programs window gives me the option of "Recommended Programs" or Other Programs. With the Browse button below that.
6. I click Browse and attempt to navigate to C:\Windows\system32\url.dll. In the windows directory there another Directory (System32) as you point out.
7. I click on Sys32 and start looking for url.dll..not there..yet when I do a search in windows..it finds it..the actual directory..Windows explorer...It IS there...I click on it and a warning comes up to ask me what I'd like to open this with...That's where it gets hazy.

The problem in communication is that you are saving the Web page to the desktop and I failed to read that in the initial post. My directions for changing the icon apply to saving a shortcut to a Web page to the desktop (using File|Send|Shortcut to desktop rather than Save As...)
You might be able to change the icon by going into Windows Explorer to Tools|Folder Options|File types tab, scrolling down to HTML and clicking the "Restore" button. Otherwise it will take a registry edit and I'm not sure what value to alter to get the desired icon.

OK..sorry for the miscommunication..I'll give it a try..After that I'll throw my laptop out the window from 12 stories..that should change the icons.
Thanks again
