Bad Image Checksum\ crypt32.dll

Here is the message I posted a couple days ago...

Okay...here is my problem.  My husband was trying to upgrade the computer via the update reminder that shows up in the bottom right hand corner.  He left the computer alone so it could upgrade all that was needed, came back and the computer started to run slow.  So, he figured he would shut down the computer completely and reboot.  Now when we try to turn on the comp it goes through the whole windows thing and then it pauses on a black screen and then a blue screen appears with the following message;
stop: c0000221 {Bad Image Checksum}
the image CRYPT32.dll is possibly corrupt.  The header checksum does not match the computed checksum.
I went looking through the forums trying to see if there were any messages posted that was related to my problem.  But, I've tried a few of them but the same message keeps popping up.  Please Help!!!

Thank You

nocompwiz,

See if replacing the file will correct the problem. Boot to the Recovery Console (see this <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed / replaced from this post by Dell>).   At the command line in Recovery console enter the following (substituting the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive for X :

expand X\i386\crypt32.dl_ c:\windows\system32\crypt32.dll

and press . You should see a message indicating that the file has been copied. Note that there is a space after "_" and before "c:".

Remove the XP CD and reboot and see if the system will boot to Windows.

But after typing expand X\i386\crypt32.dl_ c:\windows\system32\crypt32.dll  or expand X\i386\crypt32.dll_ c:\windows\system32\crypt32.dll this is what I get "the path or file specified in not valid".  But when I change the "X" to a "D" it says "there is no floppy disk or cd in the drive".  What am I doing wrong?  Please help me.

nocompwiz,

My error. I left out a critical colon. The command should start with X:\i386... not X\i386.

I have a Dell Demension 2400 series.  I need directions in lamen terms.  Here's what I've done so far.  I just found out how to get IDE-CD or however it's written to be used first.  Now when I restart the computer it automatically boots the cd in the drive.  Then it goes through the whole process of setting up windows.  Then I type in "R" for recovery.  Then it takes me to a black screen which says;
1: C:\Windows
"Which windows installation would you like to log onto"
(To cancel, press Enter)?
I chose 1 (enter)
Type the Administrator password:
I type in my password (enter)
C:\Windows>
and then I type in expand X:\i386\crypt32.dl_ c:\windows\system32\crypt32.dll (enter)
The path or file specified is not valid.

Is this how it is suppose to be done?  Is there any other way that I can do this without losing the important information that I have on my computer?
