Bad Image Checksum

Okay...here is my problem.  My husband was trying to upgrade the computer via the update reminder that shows up in the bottom right hand corner.  He left the computer alone so it could upgrade all that was needed, came back and the computer started to run slow.  So, he figured he would shut down the computer completely and reboot.  Now when we try to turn on the comp it goes through the whole windows thing and then it pauses on a black screen and then a blue screen appears with the following message;
stop: c0000221 {Bad Image Checksum}
the image CRYPT32.dll is possibly corrupt.  The header checksum does not match the computed checksum.
I went looking through the forums trying to see if there were any messages posted that was related to my problem.  But, I've tried a few of them but the same message keeps popping up.  Please Help!!!

Thank You

nocompwiz,

See if replacing the file will correct the problem. Boot to the Recovery Console (see this). At the command line in Recovery console enter the following (substituting the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive for X:

expand X\i386\crypt32.dl_ c:\windows\system32\crypt32.dll

and press . You should see a message indicating that the file has been copied. Note that there is a space after "_" and before "c:".

Remove the XP CD and reboot and see if the system will boot to Windows.

I did everything you have given me.  but should it be saying the command is not recognized.  type HELP for a list of supported commands.  What does this mean?  Should I reboot anyways?  Thank you so much for your help.

nocompwiz,

When you typed the entry did you leave a space after the command expand? If you type "Help" you will see a list of commands which work in Recovery Console, one of which is expand.

The first time I did not put a space between expand and x.  But, when I did it says The system cannot find the file or directory specified.  what should I do now?
