Bad Pool Header blue screen - can't load Windows

I hope someone can help.

I had an IRQ conflict and brought my Inspiron 8600 to work where tech support tried to help me resolve it.  Thought we had, and downloaded SP2.  When I took it home, I discovered the IRQ conflict hadn't been resolved and determined it was due to the wireless card.  I searched for a new driver or patch and downloaded something from the Intel website.  After installing the patch, I was asked if I wanted XP or Intel to run the wireless card - I chose XP.

Upon reboot, I got part way through Windows loading and went to the Blue Screen with a Bad Pool Header error.  I cannot boot up to Windows except in Safe Mode.  I have tried to restore to last known working configuration, but it didn't work.

I haven't backed up in a while and would like to save my documents, photos and music files before I screw up the computer completely.  Then I hope to fix it.  I went to Firedog and they want about $300 and 1 week+ to backup and fix.  I'm hoping someone here can help me either back up the files myself, or backup and fix the machine both.

So my questions:
1) My computer won't recognize USB ports in safe mode, so I can't use an external hard drive or USB drive to save to - will I be able to write to a CD (I don't have one here so haven't tried yet)
2) Have not tried Safe Mode with Networking yet as I am loathe to keep adding error files to the computer - anything I can do with this? email all the files?
3) What else can I do to back up the files or am I stuck with Firedog?
4) If I uninstall the Windows SP2, will that remove the problem? If I haven't managed to back up, will I lose my files?
5) If I install Windows completely again, I assume that would fix things but I would lose everything?

Any other suggestions?

Thank you for your help! Thank goodness I have access to another computer through work (which is how I'm posting this)

Have you tried removing any extra hardware you can, and try to boot normally?

You can do what is called a Repair install of XP, this will leave your Data intact. but if there are hardware or Driver conflicts, this may not resolve the problem.

If you have Data you cannot afford to lose, remove the hard drive from the PC and use a USB adapter to connect it to another PC to copy data off, then put it back in the Laptop and try the repair procedure outlined in this article.
