Beeping noise at startup

Question

My Inspiron 1100 is three years old. It makes a very loud beeping sound sometimes just before I start windows xp, and then tells me I need to start it in Safe Mode. I have no idea how to begin trying to fix this problem. What's wrong with it? What can I do?
