Although I believe many of these beta products will be fee-based eventually. Windows Defender (i.e. Microsoft AntiSpyware) is the one exception I know about.
Lots of people pay and my own favorite is NOD32 as there is none better for AV.
I mention the MS product for the reason some people may prefer to have the MS brand attached to the product. The compatibility question should already be answered for the user that has an OP SYS like Win XP, SP-2.
Thanks to SR45 and dxernnj for the heads up on these new programs. Although I have the paid version of Zone Alarm Pro with all of its AV and Spy features, I removed it to try the Beta. I already had the Beta for MS's spyware.
Why? I noticed so much activity on my computer almost all of the time (with update checks etc.), I wanted to see if the Microsoft programs ran more effeciently, without so much work. I want to get a feel for what VISTA has to offer in this area.
Don't know if I like it yet, and for sure wont pay for it as long as I have the ZAP Pro utility. One thing I like so far is that the Beta updated all my office updates, the more critical ones, in one fell swoop. One thing that made me somewhat uncertain was the amount ofcleaned-up program files (from many of the programs I have). They are stored in the Beta until I see if I will need them. I'm not sure if they are all temporary files, in which case I can delete them.

Jane

The fee-based version of Microsoft One-Care will probably appeal to two types of people:
1) Newbies who don't realize free anti-virus and free firewalls are available
2) Those who don't trust the effectiveness of free firewalls and anti-virus programs
1.True
2. I use Zone Alarm Free Firewall and Avast Anti-Virus Free. I haven't had any trouble so far. And hackers tend to target Microsoft products, which "may" make any protection provided by Microsoft "more" vulnerable.
IMHO, Microsoft "should" provide these programs for free, since it's their software that has holes in it. I know they don't have to, but it would be a decent thing to do.
Well, curiosity got the better of me, an had to try it out. Seems ok, but I noticed my quick launch will show all white instead of the shortcuts when I click on the arrow for awhile. Then it shows up. I uninstalled Avast and Zone Alarm. Who knows, if the program works well, and is priced reasonably, I might buy iy when it's no longer in beta.
I will try to keep you updated.
Update: I used GoBack to go back before I installed Windows One Care.
Why? I could not run a WOC virus scan without it freezing up on "deleted items.dbx"
The progress bar stayed on 0% for scanning, although it showed files being scanned.
I guess it's because of the programs I have on my computer, maybe.
6 programs run at startup, excluding Firewall/antivirus. Yes, I uninstalled ZA and AVAST and rebooted. So, at this time, WOC is not for me.

It is very easy to uninstall as well. MS has introduced some new products and a good listing of the "Live Beta" offerings is found at:

To all who are trying out this Beta, I'd be interested in your opinions on the product thus far.
