BIG problem with start up...please help...

Hello. I recently got a new laptop. An Inspiron 2200. Whenever I start up...a blue screen appears and it says the following:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the Stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching and shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or diable componets, restart your computer, press F8 to selet Advanced Startup options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF8305E1F, 0xF88954E0, 0xF88951DC)

*** ftdisk.sys - Address F8305E1F base at F82F5000, DateStamp 3b7d8419 "

This is the entire message I recieve continously. Especially in the last 24 hours. I have done the F8 thing, and the do Safe Mode and then this blue screen just appears again. Any ideas of what can be done to fix this problem? Thank you...

Sorry, but I just noticed this now. I also had the same problem with windows. Have you had any power outages? This is the cause of a damaged harddrive. Restart with the Windows CD. You should get a menu, select "Recovery Console" Press Enter. You should see something like this "C:/windows" if not, the program can not find windows. Type chkdsk /r it should repair itself.

Oh....and my laptop did not come with a Windows CD. I ordered it through Costco, and it came with a WorksSuite CD to reinstall programs if I needed too and a free 6 months of AOL disc. No Windows CD in it...

Elaine87,

Without a Windows XP reinstallation CD there is nothing you can do. Had you purchased the computer from Dell you could call Customer Support and they would send an XP CD to you. Whether they will do so since you purchased through Costco is questionable. If they will not, and Costco will not provide one, you will have to purchase a retail copy.

If you have any further questions, please post them in the Software - Windows XP conference.
