I purchase a labtop from a friend, my daughter has a 71 page report typed on it and it is giving a blue screen with memory dump and code c0000218. I have tryed the F2, F12 and it will not open in any safe mode or last mode, just takes me back to blue screen. I do not have a disc or anything for it. The report is due Tuesday.Windows XP, Latitude C640

Summer123,
A blue screen with an error of c0000218 indicates you have a corrupt registry. To repair this error you will have to have A Windows XP CD, preferably a Dell Reinstallation CD for Windows. Repairing a corrupt registry is fairly complex, but doable without the loss of data. Print out and follow the instructions given here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545/ This procedure is recommended when a Stop: c0000218 error occurs on an established operating system. It also can occur during Windows XP setup on a defective hard hard drive.
Considering the deadline for your daughter's report, I would recommend that you contact a local, reputable computer repair shop that works on laptops. All reputable shops that specialize in laptops have USB adapters for laptop drives. They can quite easily remove the drive from the Latitude, connect it to another computer using a USB adapter, and copy your daughter's documents and data files to a CD, DVD or flash drive. This will allow your daughter to meet her report deadline and backup other important data. A more extensive analysis on the drive can then be performed.
I hope this information helps.

If I were you, I would get the operating system disk from the friend who sold you the computer. That disk and license belong to the computer, not the friend. The MS license states that if the computer is sold, the license and disk must be included. A repair shop will charge you a lot for data recovery. You might do better asking a computer literate friend to help.
