Boot with the WinXP CD in the drive and go to the recovery console. This is the first "R" you come to only a couple of pages into setup At the command prompt, type

Fixboot
ENTER

Fixmbr
ENTER

chkdsk /r  (Note there is a space before /)
and let that run.

I did everything you said . It ran smoothly. Unfortunately it made no difference. Still a blue screen after user login. Anything else I can try?

If that did not work I think you will have to do an over-the-top (repair) install.

Boot up with the XP CD in the drive and let Setup run. Go past the "C" and "R" repair options by presssing Enter just as if you're doing a clean install and you'll eventually get an option to "Repair an existing installation". That's the one you want. If it asks about formatting you've gone wrong, so start over.

You'll get to keep your existing apps & settings, but you need to re-install SP1 / SP2, Windows Updates & any unsigned drivers afterwards.

That is indeed an error which should not occur.
Here is the MS article about it
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823303

So it appears to be either faulty RAM or faulty Catroot2 folder
In light of your original problem, if you have more than one stick of RAM I suggest you remove one and try again.
If not any better swap them over and try again.

If that fails to help you will have to follow the instructions in the aticle about the Catroot2 folder
"During setup, and while the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section of this article appears on the screen, press SHIFT+F10 to open a command prompt, type
cd\windows\system32\
and then press ENTER ."
Restart the computer. Try to finish the repair again.

Well...I am ready to throw that computer against the wall. I am glad I still have a Laptop to work on. The install failed with this message: Fatal Error
Setup failed to install product catalogs. This is a fatal errorthe setup log files should contain more information. Press ok to view setup log. So I pressed ok. The signature for Windows XP Home Edition is invalid. Error code 426. Setup had problems registering the following OLE control DLL C:\windows\system32\initpki.dll. Contact system administrator who may provide assistance in diagnosing this problem.
I am sure I did things as you said. What now?
