Blue Screens with VISTA

I have an Inspiron 1721 with the VISTA operating system (there was no choice), home premium.  I get very anoying Blue Screens when booting up.  It happens about once every 5 or 6 times I boot up.

I have contacted Tech Support twice.  Both times they thought they fixed it, both times they did not.

They have suggested re-installing the operating system, but I am in the start of a very busy tax season, so this is not a feasable option (too much time).

An error message blames McAfee, and recommends running the automatic update tool, but it does not resolve the problem.

Is anyone else have this problem, and does anyone know a possible fix?  I wish I still had XP, never had a problem with it during 4 years of use.

I'd remove McAfree faster then a 10" spike in my foot.

Use AVG + ZoneAlarm or Norton Internet Security or Norton 360 or Microsoft One Care instead of McAfee.

Uninstalling that and installing a good AV only takes 30 minutes.

Jumping from McAfee to Norton is jumping from the frying pan into the fire.  Stay as far away from that problematic software pile of junk as you can.

ejn I've been using Rogers since Jun 2006, and I've been using the Norton Security Online from Rogers/Yahoo since then.  It has had absolutly no problems.

McAfee, TredMicro, and AVG are worse then Norton.

In fact, on Vista Home Premium, Norton is taking up around 50mb of my 3GiB of ram.

hi

even i had a similar issue since day one of my Laptop. i used to get blue screen while working, unlike in ur case as u said it happens while booting.

The frequency of the problem was also same to urs in my case too.

i did factory restore on Dell's request. It didnt work.

Then they advised me to Format the hardisk and reinstall Vista.

mine is Home Basic.

Even in my case it was told to me by them that McAfee is giving problem.

so i didnt install McAfee Antivirus again.

rather i jst installed McAfee's internet Security direct from Net. As of now its been a month and i'v not experienced the problem at all.

Only solution to my understanding is Format-reinstall Vista.

It takes an hour max.if u can afford that well n gud.

So, I'm not the only one experiencing the exact same problems. I mean exactly Identical. And by the way don't change your version of Anti-virus software. I have found that during my almost eight year usage of McAfee they have been pretty consisitent. It has now been two month's since I received this second replacement 1420 Inspiron. The only thing I can suggest to you is what I'm about to do if you still have a valid warranty, ask that this system be replaced for the the third time with a different model. I too am right in the middle of an important project, which requires the use of my computer. I tell you I am not a happy camper at this moment.

I also have Inspiron 1720 now, had to return the 1721 because of the same problem. Blue screen during shutdown, not everytime but every few times.

After the last reboot, I was asked if I wanted Windows to find a solution, I said yes.

It came back and said that there is incompatibility issues between Vista and the Trend Micro PC-cillian software and to go to the Trend Micro site for an update.

I did and downloaded the update, but the .exe won't run, I keep getting Access Denied.

Should I uninstall Trend Micro?

Allan was right.  After spending too many hours on the phone with Dell and McAfee tech support, who each time assured me they had fixed the problem, the only thing that worked is when I un-installed McAfee myself.  Thanks for your help everyone.

Now, to get a refund for my 3 year subscription from Dell ...

Well, I finally decided to uninstall Trend Micro PC-cillian and I have not had the Blue Screen problem since. I will contact Dell to see if a refund is possible. Trend Micro was an included product so I am not sure what it means. I am now running avg free and zonealarm firewall, both which I ran for years on my xp system.

Even though none of you helped me directly I did follow your lead with uninstalling the security software and it appears to have helped. If I have problems again I will let you know...

Thanks,

Boat4fun,

When you tried to install the .EXE file for TREND, did you right mouse click it and run as admin.  This should prevent the ACCESS DENIED error.

MustangMike,

Trend Micro PC-cillian is anti-virus, firewall software that came with my Inspiron 1720. 3 year subscription was included in price.

I have also installed free avg and zonealarm free firewall and have not had any problems since I un-installed the Trend software.

I am curious to hear what eskymi will have to say about what anti-virus software is being run on their machines.

eskymi,

I am pretty sure I tried that, but I hesitate to reinstall it again and download the update that is supposed to fix the Trend - Vista compatibility issue.

Are you running Trend on your machines?

Don't know what Trend is.  I installed free AVG for virus protection.  Dell/McAfee uninstalled McAfee and reinstalled through the Web site, claiming it was an early version giving me the Blue Screen problems, but the next morning I got 2 Blue screens in a row trying to boot up, so the first thing I did when I did get up was uninstall McAfee.  I have not had any problems since.

I use AVG on all 5 of my computers.  In fact when I configured my last 3 computers, on two I was given the option to have NO AV program installed and I went with that and just installed AVG.

I have only had 1 time where I got a virus and it was intentional. I opened a worm virus through my email to see if it any of my antivirus stuff would catch it and AVG did, Norton didn't. IT was at that time I dumped Norton.

WE had McAfee preinstalled on a couple laptops and I uninstalled it immediately, it seemed to just slow the machines down. After doing much research I have found many people that have posted that the free virus programs such as AVAST, AVG are just as good as the subscription ones and they cause less problems with compatibility issues on your computer.

Make a complete image backup of your system with a program like Acronis so you will get a full image to reinstall. Then look in the setup and see if the sata controller is set to ACHI or ATA. Set it to ATA if it isnt and then reinstall your backup. Mine had random reboots and blue screens also since out of the box. I tried everything from drivers to memory switching etc and Dell service calls many times. None of that worked for me. I set my bios to use ATA for the SATA drive and reinstalled my backup and it runs like a rock solid machine now with no problems. It will run either Vista premium that came with it or the upgrade i put on it to vista ultimate.
