Boot problem Dimension 5150
My problem:
PC Dell Dimension 5150, 2 x 160 GB HD, Win XP, SP3
an external Maxtor 250 GB HD
During a backup procedure I had the intention to resize some partitions on the ext. HD, using Norton Partition Magic. During this sequence, I expierienced a power break (...hapened often at that time). When I restarted my PC, the boot proces came to a halt. During my efforts, the PC "went black". I tried a restart with the following statement early in the boot process:
Drive 3 not found
Parallel ATA,Pata-1 (PRI IDE Slave)
Floppy disk seek failure Strike F1 to continue,F2 tu run the setup utility
After striking F1, the following message show up:
Can't load kernel file
After striking F2, coming to the setup utility, I'm not able to reset the system the right way.
Thats the actual situation.
I have no Restore-CD, unfortunately...and I would like to keep the content of the (..at least) one HD. The other HD was used for backup.
Any hint or help? Thank you in advance!!
Kind Regards
erikcrete

Wish that I could help with more answers, but when my HD crashed on our Dell Dimension 2400, (2 days after warranty expired) Dell sent me an entire new set of replacement disks By overnight mail -free of charge! I was most impressed! Check the Dell website for info...
BEST of Luck!

Sounds like the bios got jumbled during the power outage, try this
Power up the PC
* Watch the keyboard lights. When they flash, tap the F2 key several times
* The message, Entering Setup should appear
* Down arrow to Maintenance
* Choose Load Defaults
* Click Continue - Restore factory defaults
Then try to boot into windows.
If you are not sure how to navigate the bios, just look at the bottom of the screen when you are in the bios for the keyboard strokes to use for navigation.

...thank you for your reply.
I have tried the The F2-Setup function -> Restore Factory Defaults, but the reset will not give me a change in my situation: no boot into Windows possible.
I have now contracted a Superuser in Crete to help me on my arrival to the island again...
Best Regards

1. How many hard drives are inside the PC?
2. "Can't load kernel file" is this the exact and complete message?, if not please post it
