Can you boot into Safe Mode?  Choose "Safe Mode with command prompt"
At the prompt type
chkdsk /r  ( there is a space before /)
OK

If you can`t do that I think you will need an XP installation Disk and do the above in the Recovery Console.

I don`t know another way to fix it.

I can't boot it up in any mode. i tried all the safe modes and it doesn't get past the shell32.dll problem.

i will resolve the floppy disk problem tonight and then try a system restore using control + f11 but i'm not holding out much hope.

Boot from XP CD to Recovery Console. At the c:\ prompt, exactly type the following:

expand d:\i386\shell32.dl _ c:\windows\system32
Press enter

NOTES:
d: is drive letter for your optical drive. Your drive letter may be different.
Be sure to include _ (underscore symbol) in shell32.dl_
Put one space between _ and c:\windows\

When that's done, remove XP CD and reboot normally.
