Broadcom Wireless BCM42RLY service

3 week old Inspiron 1525, Vista Home Premium, All Microsoft updates installed.

In event viewer I have this entry dozens of times -

"The BCM42RLY service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified."

What file? Why can't it find it?

My wireless seems to work fine, but I've a suspicion it's impacting on attempts to CHKDSK.

It's not a Trojan I've scanned, I'd just like to disable it from  starting.

Thanks.

Kevin,

I misspoke -- I didn't actually delete the key (I'm too chicken.)  I changed the value of the Start DWORD to 4, which disables the service.  The value has been preserved across reboots, and the service no longer attempts to start.

(If I HAD deleted it and it put itself back, I'd be calling for an exorcism, as that would be way too virus-like.)

Larry,

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BCM42RLY.

I've exported the key to a .reg file, and pasted the contents below.  Note that I changed the value of my Start DWORD to 4 from 2, in order to disable the service.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BCM42RLY]
"Type"=dword:00000001
"Start"=dword:00000004
"ErrorControl"=dword:00000001
"ImagePath"=hex(2):73,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,64,00,\
  72,00,69,00,76,00,65,00,72,00,73,00,5c,00,42,00,43,00,4d,00,34,00,32,00,52,\
  00,4c,00,59,00,2e,00,73,00,79,00,73,00,00,00
"DisplayName"="BCM42RLY"

Cheers,

Rob

Removing the entries from Device Manager and then installing the update driver is what I would have done as well if it did not appear in Add & Remove Programs (some drivers do, some don't).

I wonder if BCM42RLY is a Microsoft version of one of the Broadcom system files?

What is the registry path to that key, Rob? I'm thinking of finding a 1525 here to "play" with to see what I can see ...

Thank you for the info.  Unfortunately, its looking like I won't get to look into it until Monday, but I'll be sure to post the results.

I've had same problem on a Dell Latitude D630 for months - 6 error log entires posted every boot.  I just made the registry change provided by RCBullar so that Windows does not try to start the service.  That fixed the problem for me.

Thanks

Dig on this error while troubleshooting cisco vpn client and vista compatibility problem (error 442). I don't know is it related, but when truing to connect vpn, this error pop-ups in event viewer exactly 5 times. It pop-up also on some other services startup. I found that this is related to broadcom NetXtreme 57xx controller and try to update with newest broadcom driwers, but no use.

Larry, I have a vostro 1500 and am having the same issue with the [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BCM42RLY] problem.  Did you ever get a resolve to this?  It is causing my laptop to hang on bootup and then i get the errors in the event logs.  thanks

Hi also need quite a bit of help.

My Dell inspiron lap top is less than 1 yr old. most recently it's begun shutting down without a moments notice. I reboot and then it flashes and shuts down again. it's quite frustrating so i brought it in to the store i had purchased it from. they simply reloaded windows vista on my computer, and to no surprise the problem is still there. In the events log it has over 1,000 errors of BCM42RLY. How do I go about fixing this problem? I've seen the other comments and feel like there might be a solution but, i am not to computer savey and do not want to risk doing more harm. would it be possible to have more of a step by step guide on this problem?

I downloaded the file, moved it into the c:\windows\system32 file and restarted. The BCM32RLY error went away. I wouldn't advise people to mess with the registry files unless they are a professional. The REGISTRY entry will automatically be entered after restarting. This is the correct way to solve the issue!
