browser freezes when doing windows update

I'm not sure if windows is doing proper automatic updates.
every time PC is starting i see the win-update icon in the task bar, showing 0% downloaded, but before i get the chance to log-on to internet the icon disappears...
I even change the 'automatic updates' times for the next hour and the icon doesn't re-appear.
so i try to manually do win-update but the browser freezes up(also sloooooows down PC)... and just in case there was a bad shortcut, I've tried threw favorites, browser tool, control panel.
i knew it wasn't possible but i even copied & pasted addr.( http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx) in FoxFire browser, of cause, it said i needed to do win-update thru IE...
Why can't i get to this site?
Is there a virus blocking me from doing critical updates?

Doubt very much that a virus is preventing download & install Windows Updates.

From what you say it sounds like you have Control Panel > Automatic Updates settings for Automatic download & install. That being correct, then any relevant updates will be installed unless you shutdown your PC before installation is complete, but windows will normally give a warning if you try to shutdown.

I to have seen the system tray icon appearing, then quickly disappearing, but just ignore it. On occasions I launch Windows Updates just to manually check for any Updates or Review update history. On a few occasions the Windows Updates application is slow to load & sometimes appears to freeze, probably related to the server being used for supply/demand of MS update downloads at that time.

Not a technical solution, just an observation, but when I press Ctrl + Alt + Del keys (to end the task) the application often & strangely tends to load before I can select end task?

thanx, bell boy,
it just seems that everything, at once, is going wrong with my pc...
right now i think it's my zonealarm pro that's screwing up...
i shut it down and i was able to go to win-update(never had to shut ZAP down before)
i think ie'7' is causing me problems ever since i upgraded...
thanx again

Only problem I’ve encountered with ZAP, IE7 & most recent batch of MS (February 13th) updates was after installing KB928090, see this post
