0x00000024: NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM

A problem occurred within NTFS.SYS, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS file system drives. There may be a physical problem with the disk, or an Interrupt Request Packet (IRP) may be corrupted. Other common causes include heavy hard drive fragmentation, heavy file I/O, problems with some types of drive-mirroring software, or some antivirus software. I suggest running ChkDsk or ScanDisk as a first step; then disable all file system filters such as virus scanners, firewall software, or backup utilities. Check the file properties of NTFS.SYS to ensure it matches the current OS or SP version. Update all disk, tape backup, CD-ROM, or removable device drivers to the most current versions.

Run chkdsk, then derfrag the hard drive.

I also ran virus scans. No virus.

I did the checkdisk first thing. No bad sectors.

Won't turning off all protection leave my computer vulnerable?  I have DSL and my internet is always on.

How do you check the file properties of NTFS.SYS?

I will try the defrag, although I don't see how it can have gotten badly fragmented. I just reinstalled Vista at the end of Dec. and have only been using the computer for not yet a month when I got the two bluescreens within the last 3 days.

I have also discovered, now, that my defragmenting is regularly scheduled every Wednesday, according to my computer, and the last time it defragged was last Wednesday. So it would have to have gotten fragmented suddenly afterward for fragmenting to be the problem. I would think.

Disconnect from the internet while you diagnose the problem by disabling some of the software mentioned. If the problem stops, then you know it is one of the software's you disabled.

This may sound like an odd question, but why would virus protection programs that I had on for a month that have never caused problems before suddenly begin to start to cause problems after a whole month? I only have two on, Ad-Aware and AVG, and both are up-to-date.

Just asking.

Also, about the Virus protection, I had both of those programs on for months before I reinstalled, and they were never a problem, and they weren't the problem that I had to reinstall about.

I am beginning to wonder if Vista is compatible with any program. Nearly all of the programs I have on are the newest available.

It may have ben caused by an AV update. Similar sort of thing happened to me with PCcillin
