camera scanner wizard

Have recently purchased a new desktop with windows XP - but when I plug my sony cybershot digital camera into the usb port, the computer does not recognize the device. Sony suggested that the camera scanner wizard might be disabled -- any suggestions for enabling the wizard?

Thank you.

Let's see- I have tried using all of the different USB ports, and each time I get a message "USB device not recognized" - and the camera and scanner wizard fails to pop up on the screen.  The camera is a Sony Cybershot DSC-P51.  I can't try your other suggestions now (computer & camera are at home, and I am not) - but I will try that later.  Thanks for the suggestions - please keep 'em coming!

Thanks!  I tried that already -- but my camera model/manufacturer is not listed in the drop down menu on the XP wizard - and it won't let me proceed from that point.

Any other suggestions?

I still believe you need the software/drivers CD in order to get your camera to function with the PC, and here are my reasons why.

1. In your initial post you said the error message you received was that "USB device not recognized". That tells me that your port is working, but that the operating system doesn't understand what is plugged into it. The way to tell an operating system what is plugged into it is with drivers. They are either resident on the operating system, or you add them when you set up the device. Although Win XP has some resident software you can use, you still need to tell it what you have plugged in.

2. I don't think its a lack of power to the port in this case otherwise the error would have been different.

If I were you, I would order the CD and give it a try.

Good Luck!

sbb,

This reference may provide some additional useful information on the problem. The Scanner and Camera Wizard launches automatically when Windows XP detects a PnP device. It is not something that you can specifically enable.

Microsoft are putting this down as their fault. Go to: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c680a7b6-e8fa-45c4-a171-1b389cfacdad&DisplayLang=en

and run the autoplay repair wizard. Fixed my problem first time!!
