Can't remove java virus

Computer:    Inspiron 5150

Windows Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.061219-0316 : Service Pack 2)

Virus Software:  Trend Micro PC-cillin 2006

I ran a scan and found that it wouldn't remove the follow viruses:

                   JAVA_BYTEVER.AC

                   JAVA_BYTEVER.AB

                   JAVA_BYTEVER.A

I saw on one of the forums that the way to remove them was to pick the Java icon in the control panel, and clear the cache .  When I went to the control panel, I have no Java icon. What do I do?

These are these things that might help you determine my problem and find a solution:

I went to:   Network and Internet Connections

                   Internet Properties

and clicked on the Advanced Tab

I then scolled down and noticed that under Microsoft VM, these two files were not checked:

                   Java console enabled (requires restart)

                   Java logging enabled

I also noticed that the following was checked:

JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled (requires restart)

I am somewhat familiar with computers, but lack troubleshooting skills.  I need help badly.  Please be very specific about the steps I need to take to remove these two viruses, and how I might keep them from plaguing me again.  I appreciate any help you can offer.  Thank you.

You can try these free online scanner/cleaners:

If they don't do it, go to Dell's HijackThis forum. Click the red link at top of that page and read all the FAQs before posting over there. Then grab a free copy of HijackThis and post the entire log for help from the experts.

This web site describes the issue you described. Users running Windows ME and XP must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of infected systems.

I am surprised that this virus infected your computer since you are using xp sp2. Microsoft issued a patch back in 2003 so if I were you I would check an see if the patch referred to in this bulletin has been installed on your computer. Do you install the monthly critical updates from MS?

Good Luck.

I never heard of that virus before so I just google searched it and found this link that has helpful instructions. Many of the forums that I read mentioned something called CWShredder as being helpful for this viri. At the above link there is some links to various removal tools... hope it helps a bit.
From what little I read, that one can be a real bug-a-boo to completely get rid of.

(hope this link works; I had difficulty with "copy & paste" for some reason...)

That's a good point; hope he / she  has SP-2 installed.....and all Windows Updates up to date too.

That link I posted above was not the exact one I wanted to list....  but when you go to that link, you'll see a thread for  "removal of the  javabyte...."; click that one.  Then you'll see a link for  "how to clean an infected computer".  That is the one I tried to paste here for you but it wouldn't paste here for some reason.

Much helpful info on that page with links for various removal tools too.

If " JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled (requires restart)" [or anything else] is checked under Microsoft VM [=Virtual Machine], you're running an obsolete program which is no longer supported.   (I agree with the others, very surprising to find this on an XP-SP2 system).

Microsoft VM should be uninstalled, and replaced by Sun's Java.   Upon installation of Sun's Java, you should find the ("missing" ) Java icon in your control panel, at which point you will be able to clear its cache.

Just an afterthought...

I too have one of the first issue 5150 Inspirion with the original Phoenix bios (although I don't use it much anymore). It came with xp pro sp1. I have always kept it updated (including sp2 upgrade)... Even though Microsoft critical updates patched VM, it was never removed from the "Internet Options > Advanced Tab" Items, and always remained Checked.

Long ago, I unchecked the "Java console enabled (requires restart)", "Java logging enabled", and "JIT compiler for vitural machine enabled (required restart)., and then installed Java (Sun). You don't have to uninstall Microsoft VM, but can if you want or need to by following the instructions at this web site.

Your can download the new Java 6 at
