can i restore my dell?

I have an xp media edition.  it is a demention 8100 I believe.  I can't use my computer all because I tried to install a mouse.  As soon as I restarted I got the blue screen.  It said if i recently installed something i was to uninstall it.  Problem is, I can't uninstall it because it won't let me into windows.  I can't get into windows in safe mode.  I can't use last know working setting.  Nothing.  I tired the repair counsel with no luck.  I have had so many different error messages come up now I can't even tell you what they were.  I can't reboot it from an xp disk either because when I do it say there is an I/O device error so it won't install windows.  I hate to lose all my pictures and programs ect. but I just don't know what else to do.  Any ideas?
I am on my son's computer trying to figure what if anything I can do to fix mine and he is getting tired of not being able to use his computer either.  HELP!

thanks.

If you can't boot into Safe Mode, and can't boot from the Windows CD I think it's time to take the machine to a local repair shop (assuming it's out of warranty) and have them check it out.

I sent it away today.  I hope I don't lose what is on my hard drive but it was so messed up.  I will definitely try to figure out my dvd writer thing so I can get my pictures saved to disk.  Before I could never figure it out so I didn't bother.  Thanks.
