hi there most would recommend a system restore or scanregw or even a restore from some sort of backup.   but upon looking it up on the internet i found several articles about reinstall and such.  do not just reinstall the windows installer, other things must be done first.   if your interested post back. you could just take a look at the pages first.

thanks, brian

Thanks, but it seems that the installer is not compatible with XP.

I suspect it may be a program, (I don't know which) that may be causing the trouble. It works fine on my laptop, but not on my desktop.

I even did a Windows Repair, and it did not help.

So, I went back to the way it was by using a Ghost image file prior to the repair.

I will probably have to do a clean reinstall of Windows, which I do not want to do, yet.

Fortunately (spelling?) I don't come across these types of files often.

Thanks again.

That downloader comes from Installshield. You could try their support for possible answers here:

Try your installs in safe mode.

Thanks all. I decided to do a "Clean install"

Actually, it was a Ghost image file with SP2, and some games that only allow me a certain amount of reinstalls before I have to buy it again.

The windows installer problems I had everytime I opened paint sho pro and the other type of file problem is gone now.

It is going to take me awhile to get everything back the way it was.

I found out why I had the problem:

Avast Anti-virus Free Edition.

I uninstalled AVG today, and installed Avast.

The install programs I had trouble with quit working.

Went back to AVG.
