Can not resolve SONIC Updater Issue

I recently began getting constant requests for the SONIC CD to supply a missing file, U.MIS in order to run the updater.  The updater needs to be removed with Cntrl-Alt-Delete to make it go away.  Even though I have used the Sonic disk, the issue remains.  SONIC support suggests removing the updater which I have done.  There seems to be no way to use the updater.  I went to the Dell upgrade site and downloaded an upgrade for SONIC v7.0.  The upgrade would not install, leaving a message that it was not for this SONIC program.  The SONIC software seems to be less than satisfactory.  Others have also found that SONIC causes problems with IPod which I don't own.  They solved the issue by using WMP.  Dell technical help for the issue has been unsatisfactory except for sending me the SONIC CD.  The rest of the SONIC functions such as the DVD player and R/W seem to work OK.

paindoc... Might give this a shot...it will do no harm and may well resolve your problem. First go HERE and download the Installshield Update Manager Utility. Then, go to the Sonic Support site where you will have to log in (no direct link possible) and download the Sonic Update Manager (file name, "um29.exe") and install it as well. Reboot.

The Sonic Update utility (and many other programs as well) actually uses the Installshield Update Manager. Once installed, the Installshield utility can manage how updates are performed for all installed applications that use their program which, can be handy if you have more than a couple of programs you wish to control update procedures on. And BTW...the Installshield program will place a shortcut directly on your Start Menu. It can be safely "cut and pasted" wherever else you might prefer to have it reside.

Thank you both for your answers.  MSI is correct.  I am slightly dyslexic.  Dan, I will give your suggestion a shot.   I already have the installshield manager.  This works OK for all other programs.  The Sonic Updater, UM29.EXE, is the program I had to remove.  It is present on the Sonic Disk and doesn't cure the problem.  Perhaps the missing file is on the download.  Message Edited by paindoc on 12-19-2005 10:23 AM

Thanks Ron.  I don't know if it is worth my time to repair a lousy piece of software.  I can easily use WMP if I have any trouble.  As I wrote earlier, SONIC knows about this issue and has not made a patch.  They just suggest removing the updater.  The file U29.MSI was present.  I have already tried replacing it from the disk.  The Updater never works correctly.

Lawrence,

Maybe you have a different version of Sonic than I do (v7.3) but I don't even have U29.msi file on my HD (Dimension 8400). The only Sonic-related .msi here is DLA.msi.

I turned the updater (sgtray) off in msconfig when it started nagging me about checking for updates. I did download a couple of updates manually from their site.

If WMP works for you, you might as well uninstall Sonic and put an end to those messages.

Good luck!

Ron

I have SONIC Media 7.2.3, and Record Now 2.0.  I should have thought a new XPS 400 would have had the latest software.  Go figure.

Thanks to Dan.  It turns out that I had Windows Install shield but did not have "Program (update) Manager. in working order."  This was the missing link.  Downloading and installing it after uninstalling the defective program, and lifting UM29.exe from the SONIC disk, everything seems to work.  Most programs come with their own update managers, SONIC should have provided this.  SONIC support information has no clue to the solution to their defective software problem.  The information about Program Updater was on the Microsoft site.

Lawrence,
Thanks for the update (pun intended! ;) )

Sonic Record Now, v7.3, which I have, has it's own updater called sgtray.exe. You have Sonic Media 7.2.3 and Record Now 2.0, and that's apparently different. If I remember correctly, Sonic recently merged with some other company, so yours may be the latest incarnation of the combined burning software. And with it's own new set of bugs and annoyances. :(

At least you got it sorted.

"Sonic Record Now, v7.3, which I have, has it's own updater called sgtray.exe"...

The running program is "sgtray.exe" however, the install program that provides it is the updater program, "um29.exe".  This is a normal, default installation component of Sonic software and has been through numerous versions including, the current.  If you have a look in your Add and Remove Programs applet you'll find a listing for "Sonic Update Manager" after the um29.exe install and you'll find the actual running program for it is "sgtray.exe".

On this particular computer, I uninstalled the Sonic Update Manager (RecordNow 7.2 Deluxe) which, functioned perfectly.  To check, I reinstalled it and although it installed fine, the updater was inoperable and the option in Record Now to manually update remained missing since it also relies on the update utility.  Installing the Installshield software corrected the problem completely and for whatever reason, is required for the Sonic updater to function...or at least, is required for it to function if the original update manager is ever uninstalled | reinstalled.

I've no way to be certain for this behavior but suspect the original installation includes a silent version of the Installshield program upon which the Sonic program relies and which is removed along with Sonic's updater if removed via Add and Remove Programs...thus, simply reinstalling "um29.exe" alone is insufficient to restore function to the updater.

This was a great help to me as I had the same problem. Simply removing the updater solved the problem. Of course I don't care for updates just for the program to do simple burns on a B130 that I bought for Scouts. For something more than simple data I would drop Roxio (Sonic) and go with Nero. In the past Roxio had driver problems that interferred with other programs and it doesn't appear they have come much further in the 4 or 5 years since then.

Hello Dan,
This is my first time in a forum. I've been having problems with my Sonic update manager. Everytime I boot, as the desktop is loading, WINDOWS tries to configure Sonic update manager, but fails. It tells me the program is on a cd and i can't install it. I click cancel an dozen times and it goes away. now, I have read several posts on this issue and people have had the exact same probem. i read yours and it seemed the best. but how do i login to sonic support to get the um29.exe file? I appreciate it if you could help me understand what to do in regards to your reply in which I am responding to. thank you , FLASH

If you look at Dan Manley's post above, and follow his instructions, you can make the software work if you choose to keep the updater.  Roxio recommended just removing the updater.  There is a Windows program missing on your computer.  In my case it was there but not functioning properly.  Happy New Year!

If you look carefully at Dan's post, you already have the updater.  Go to the other site listed to install the missing Windows software.
