Can Not Use System Restore.

I have been able to use the system restore feature on XP but as of today I can't. I used the McAfee Virus Scan and found no virus. I than ran Ad Ware and found eight cookies. I started to experience problems when I down loaded Active X which was suggested by McAfee. When using System Restore after saying it could not restore I clicked on a line that said some thing about a Script Alert. This was a McAfee window. If no viruses were detected what does this mean and how can it be corrected?  I hope this is clear to some one. McAfee has not been any help so far.

Thank you in advance.

I would do an online AV scan at the following site. (You may have to allow the downloading of files.)

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

If you were only testing System Restore out then just disable System Restore, restart computer and then re-enable SR. If you really need to use it and it won't work for you I would go offline, disable(shutdown) your Av program, firewall, popup blocker and/or GoBack and try again.

If still no go you could run the System File Checker (SFC). To do this go to Start/Run and enter this command:

sfc /scannow (note space)

Then, when scan is finished, try SR again. This is very unlikely to fix SR but it will replace any 'bad' system files and you never know about SR.

Thank you maxd. I have been off line for a few days. I tried to use the XP repair feature but it kept getting hung up with 13 minutes left to repair and install. I finally had to re install XP. It went ok except for a few little problems that I am still working on.

Thank you for your answering. I will print out the advice for future reference.

You should post (make a new post) those "little problems" asap; if they're install-related they may only get worse. Some people forget to install the chipset driver immediately after the install. You may be aware that the MS SP2 is downloadable from the update site. It's often good advice to say wait for a while before you install something major like this but in your case, ie with a fresh install, this may be the right time to bite the bullet. You don't, however, want to add it to a clean install that has problems already. I'd repost; sorry I can't follow you through on this.
