If the drive itself is still working you can mount it as the second (slave) drive in a working system and copy the data using Windows explorer. You can also mount the drive in an external shell connected to a USB 2.0 or Firewire port on a working computer and do the same thing.
If the drive has serious problems it may not be readable. In this case your only option is to take it to a professional data recovery service. One experienced forum member has stated that this can be in the neighborhood of $2,500 or more, so you will need to decide how important your data is in this case.
when i try to boot it from CD, the only initial mssg that i get is " checking the system configuration", then nothing happens..it does not boot further from the CD
when i tried to boot from new Vista (32bit) DVD, then it says, windows is loading files & then when the loading is completed, nothing happens further:(
can i run the recovery console by pressing F2 or F12 when i try to boot the operating system?

will it make difference if i use the original Recovery CD from DELL for my laptop..right now i have used other XP CD for booting & installing XP Prof English version...my recovery CD is in Deutsche, so i used eng version XP CD:)
