hello. thanks for the response. i should have said disk clean-up that is in the system tools. when i click the disk clean-up it waits for a minute or so as it is saying it is calculating how much space will be free, after the clean-up then it goes to all the files it will clean up and  under temporary internet you can view the files in which content.ie5 comes up. does this make any sense? thanks again. as far as a system folder, one of the files says yahoo[1] which i don't think this matters to the system.

Could you give the exact path to the folder that you cannot delete? If it is a subfolder of C:\documents and settings\ then it is a system folder and you should not try to delete it, whichever user account it is under. To delete your temporary internet files, in IE, Tools, internet options, General tab, click delete files, in the box that opens check delete all offline content, click OK, then OK to close. Toy can also access it from the control panel, Internet Options applet, or use the Disk cleanup in system tools.

Not sure what you mean by disk scan either; do you mean search?

Diskcleaner will delete the temporary internet files, but will not delete the Contents.IE5 folder, nor the 4 subfolders, nor the two files 'desktop.ini' and 'index.dat' that are in that folder (these are also system files). Nor should you try.

With regard to Index.dat in the Contents.IE5 folder, it is where Windows XP stores information about all the web sites you've visited. Some people object to that on privacy grounds, and it can also get quite large over time. You can't delete or edit it, but there are utilities available that clear the file of its accumulated contents and so reduce its size back to its original size, 32 KB. One such utility is called Spider:

http://www.fsm.nl/ward/

Although it is not mentioned, it works on Windows XP.

Spider also clears other Index.dat files, notably the one in your history folder (don't bother looking for it it is super hidden, it's actually in an equally super hidden folder called History.IE5 in your History folder).

As for Yahoo[1], is that its full name? It should be safe to delete. But the safe way to use diskcleaner, is just to let it delete the files it finds.

You can also speed up opening of Disk Cleanup by using Registry Editor & Delete Key CommpressOldFiles
use Run & type   regedit    then navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches
CommpressOldFiles

You may want to save Key in case you want to later restore Key
select Key , right click & click "Export"

If you select Disk Cleanup > Temporary Internet Files , View Files  then click  "View" > Toolbars > Address Bar
it will show the Address used , ie:

 C:\Documents and Settings\GJH\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
if you then delete "Content.IE5"  from Address box by double click on Address box ( to remove highlight) then use "Backspace" key   , then click "Go"  it will show the "Temporary Internet Files"  Folder content the same as using IE , Tools > Internet Options.

Look like its Faulty.

gryjhnhpe,

When you say it 'looks like it's faulty', do you mean because diskcleaner goes to \Contents.IE5 in stead of to \temp internet files? If so, I think that it is its normal behaviour, i.e. not a fault in any one's particular XP set up, but maybe a bug (which IMHO does not matter: Diskcleaner does remove the Temp internet files correctly).

Also, in HKLM\Software\MS\Windows\CV\Explorer\VolumeCaches I don't have any entries in the right pane (except default: value not set). I do have a sub key called 'Compress old files' (with the spaces) in the left pane, but I don't think that can be what you mean?

Yes it shows the content of "Content.IE5"  Folder instead of "Temporary Internet Files" Folder.
I know all XP's do this so I mean its a Microsoft fault.

I have previously deleted the "Compress old files" Key so I could only give the HKEY for "VolumeCaches"
& the "Compress old files" Key will be below.
If you click on "Compress old files" Key the Right pane should have  data.

thank you all for the replies. as far as the folder yahoo[1], yes, that is the name on the file in which i have another one that says interrupt[1]. this is two of 8 folders that cannot be deleted. it says it can't find the path as i mentioned before. i will download that spider to see if that helps and get back to everyone.

Spider will only fix the index.dat files. I get confused when you write about one file containing another. Folders contain files, files are files.

If Yahoo[1] is a folder, it may or may not be deletable, depending on whether you are using Yahoo or not. If you are, I would leave it alone.

Why are you so keen to delete these folders?. If you delete temporary internet files by any of the three methods indicated in the previous posts, that is all you need (can, should) do.

I just tried Disk Cleanup & it deletes the Temp Internet Files OK so course it doesn't delete the Folder  Content.IE5
F:\Documents and Settings\GJH\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
shown by
View of Temp... Int Files as it is a sub Folder of Temp...Int Files Folder & doesn't contain Temp...Int...Files.

If click OK then reopen it should show Temp... Int...Files as 0 KB.

Why would you want to delete "Content.IE5"  sub Folder anyway.?

View of Temp.. Int... Files shows wrong Folder contents at I previously Replied with.

OK ??? you could try Safe Mode by pressing F8 many times during boot (startup) until Advanced Menu is displayed
then use Arrow keys to select "Safe Mode"  press "Enter".

If that doesn't work from Normal Logon

Close all open programs.  Open a Command Prompt window  and change to the directory the  un-deletable  file/Folder is located in (with command CD ) and leave it open , just press
Ctrl+Alt+Delete to start Task Manager , Go to the Processes tab and End Process on Explorer.exe  , ignore Warning , leave Task Manager open , just click on open  Command Prompt window ,  at the command prompt type DEL  filename.ext  or  RD  /s  Foldername . Close Command Prompt window X.

On the shown Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) click File, New Task and enter EXPLORER.EXE  click OK to restart the GUI shell.
Close Task Manager X.

An easy way to get file directory is to use Search Advanced (1st 3 ticked) for filename or Foldername
Set View , Toolbars , Address Bar   , Right click on file & select "Open containing folder" , click on Address Bar  , right click & Copy.
This can then be added to CD command after CD  space ,  right click & Paste.

At Command Prompt window type command  /?   for list of parameters
ie:   rd  /?     or    del  /?

Well, I agree that XP is nannyish, and often won't let you do what you want to do, and I also react against that and fight it. However deleting system files is not a good idea. If you succeed in deleting them, at best you'll find it will just recreate them at the next startup. At worst, you'll upset XP so much it will sulk and refuse to work properly.
