Cannot edit file name

This is a weird problem with file explorer. (My system: WIndows 8, 64 bit, Inspiron 17R Special Edition Laptop of 2012)

I downloaded some PNG and JPG files, and saved some images as TIF files also. 29 total. I moved them into a new folder. I click on a file name and the name is highlighted, and I click again to put the cursor inside the name so that I can add some text to it, but then the name of the file is once again highlighted - automatically. (I did a McAffee Full Scan and there does not seem to be a problem with the computer.)

I created yet another new folder and moved each of the image files to the new folder one at a time. I was able to move 27 of the 29 files while still maintaining the ability, in the newest folder, to edit the file names. With the 28th file, a TIF file, I lost the ability to edit the file name. So, I undid (Ctrl-z) the move, and then I was able to edit a file name again.

So, I copied in a different TIF image file from a different folder, and once again I lost the ability, in the new folder, to edit the file name.

Older folders have more than 27 files and I can go into and edit those file names. However, even if I copy one of those older TIF image files into the new folder so that the new folder has 28 files, I then cannot edit any file name in the new folder. If I undo the copy, I can then edit a file name again.

I tried copying in a DOC file. That did not cause a problem. I could still edit the file names.

The length of the file name does not matter, however, a short file name is re-highlighted automatically faster than a long file name. By "re-highlighted" I mean that I click on the file name once and the name is highlighted, and then I click again to have just the cursor so that I can edit the name, and yet the computer then automatically highlights the file name again. Short names are re-highlighted in about a tenth of a second. Long names take a half a second or more.

If I keep the number of image files at 27 in the new folder and do not add to it, I can edit the file names. I click and the name is highlighted, and then I click again and the cursor is in the name and I can edit it. If I add one more TIF image file from anywhere, I can no longer edit a file name because the whole name keeps getting re-highlighted.

Very strange. Maybe someone else has noticed this problem.

Hi Nacirema,

I appreciate the detailed description provided and this issue can happen due to file permission configuration or due to a virus infection.

I suggest you to run a thorough system scan from the security software installed on the computer to check for any infection. You may also try renaming the folder using the F2 key or logging in as an administrator.

Please let me know about your findings.

F2 had same result. According to the Control Panel. I am logged in as administrator.

The image folders were under Libraries > Pictures > My Pictures.

I just now moved them to be under C:\ and now they work fine.

I have real time scanning enabled with McAffee, and I did a full scan with it, too. No problems were found.  If it is a virus maybe a later version of McAffee will find it. I do not need to have the images under Libraries.

Thank you for the quick answer and suggestions!
