Cannot find files on hard drive

windows xp service pack 2 latitude c610 60 gb hard drive, cdrw, minipci card 512 mb ram

My laptop has some anomalies.

Sometimes it boots up just fine into windows, sometimes it will not boot at all, sometimes I will only get it to boot into the Dell screen and then it hangs with the cursor flashing.

Now, I cannot get it to boot into windows at all.

I took out the hard drive, put it in an external hard drive case and looked at the files on the external hard drive with another computer. When I look at the files this way, I only see a few files including windows.

When I go into properties for the external drive, it shows that 26 gb of the 60 gb are used. The files I can access are about 12 gb; the remaining 13 gb I cannot find.

Any idea where the other 13 gb are and how I might retrieve them?

Thanks, Peter

Hi

The only files that will do you any good is

your music picture and data files like documents

and ---.exe files that you have saved !

All

of the other software you will have to reinstall after

you install windows any other files or folders are

not recoverable !

Good Luck

You might try booting from the Dell Resource (aka Drivers & Utilities) CD and running the Dell Diagnostics to check the system for hardware errors.  One of the tests is for the hard drive.

I'm not sure why half your files don't show up when viewed on the other computer.  If the drive is failing, however, that might be the cause.  If you want to you could install the manufacturers diagnostics for the hard drive on that other computer and test the drive while it is connected externally.
